BMW and New Balance to Keynote at CDFAM Berlin, 2024
With Johannes Pauli of BMW and Onur Yüce Gün from New Balance
This year’s CDFAM Computational Design Symposium in Berlin will feature keynote presentations from leading figures in the automotive design and athletic footwear industries, Johannes Pauli of BMW and Onur Yüce Gün from New Balance who will discuss cutting-edge developments in computational design, additive manufacturing and generative AI.
In his keynote, Johannes Pauli will discuss the "Industrial Challenges in Geometry Optimization for Additive Manufacturing," where he will outline how he and his team at BMW approach the integration of advanced computational design and manufacturing techniques into their vehicle design processes.
His presentation will explore the practical challenges and solutions associated with multi objective design for additive manufacturing with their their internal shape optimization software, and explorations of WAAM (Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing).
My presentation will provide some insights into our metal AM parts in series production and their development process utilizing numerical optimization methods.
I will deep dive into the challenges we faced, which might not be trivial to computational engineers.

On day two, Onur Yüce Gün will present "Shape of Generative AI".
Onur’s keynote focuses on the human in the loop, the importance of the philosophical approach to computational tools and AI in the design process, and the historical context of the adoption and leveraging of other ‘game changing/revolutionary/hyped’ tools.
Once you realize that only a fraction of what is promised can be realized, it makes more sense to keep your foot on the brake and accelerate with the tools and methods you believe in.
The tools that enable more human input proved to be more successful. As in the case of image generation tools, sketch-to-render tools create more tangible and useful results than text-to-image tools.
Those will have longevity in design processes.
